Steven Polson, a renowned artist and teacher, has had a lifelong passion for drawing and painting portraits. Having grown up near the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, he had the good fortune to see actual canvases by the Great Masters- Rembrandt, Velazquez and Van Dyke.
At age 16, he began his formal study at The Art Students’ League in New York City, going on to receive a Fine Arts degree in 1984 from The Cooper Union for the Advancement for Science and Art. He has won numerous awards for his painting, including an Elizabeth T. Greenshields Foundation Grant and The Allied Artists of America Gold Medal of Honor.
Among his notable commissions are: General Colin Powell, Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice for the U.S. Department of State; Stephen Schwarzman, Founder of The Blackstone Group for Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University, among many others.
In addition to his portrait painting, Mr. Polson has taught on the faculty of The Art Student's League, Grand Central Academy, Pratt Institute and privately at his studio.
He is a member of the Lotos Club in New York City. When not painting, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Jasmine (owner of Sewell Fine Portraiture), and his children, Benjamin, Jessie and Charles.
